I just stumbled over one more great application of video maps. It's actually tracing a marathon course!

"Wondering where the big hills are for the marathon course of the Oakland Running Festival? Want to see how the course is mapped out for Oakland’s first marathon in 25 years? Use the map to trace the marathon course from its start at Frank Ogawa Plaza, as it goes all around the city, and leads back to the finish at 14th and Broadway. Click on a different point of the map on the left to see a video of that section of the course on the right. The Oakland Running Festival starts with a Twilight 5K race around Lake Merritt on Friday evening. Customizable embed code for your Vidmaps!

Today we launched a brand new feature on Vidmap: customizable embed code! From now on everyone can easily adjust format and size of the vidmap to embed - without touching a single bit of code anymore.

Currently the following options are available:
Style/Format:
1. map and video side-by-side
2. map on top of video
Size (depending on Style):
1. 480x198, 640x264, 725x299 (for style 1)
2. 240x300, 320x400, 480x600 (for style 2)

Video Maps in 3D

We've just added to Vidmap a brand new feature of the Google Flash Maps Api: 3D Maps! This allows you to freely roll, yaw and pitch the map into every possible direction. In the near future we will give you the possibility to further customize & influence the 3D look with aid of some additional controls inside the Vidmap player. Youtube Integration

There is one cool new feature coming up on Vidmap: Youtube Integration. This means that starting by the end of August'09 you'll additionally be able to geotag ANY Youtube video on Vidmap. The big advantage for those already using Youtube is saving time by re-using the already existing footage. Nevertheless, the current upload to Vidmap function will stay in place as a second way to import footage for geotagging. One big advantage of uploading videos to Vidmap is that there's simply no limit on the maximum video playing time, which is unique compared to Youtube.

NEW: Geo-Tagging Worldwide

Vidmap's geotagging capabilities have just been extended to support street-level geotagging even in countries which are not currently blessed with google maps driving directions, e.g. Bahamas, Bahrain, Bermuda, Iceland, Israel, Mexico and Sri Lanka. As a result of this literally EVERY video worldwide can now be geo-tagged on Vidmap.

How do I register for an account at vidmap?

The use of Vidmap is totally free of charge. If however you′d like to create your own Vidmap and show it to everyone then you have to follow a short and simple registration process. To do that click on "Register" in the upper right corner of the Vidmap homepage. You will then be asked to supply a login name, a password and a valid e-mail address. Optionally you also can specify the address of your own website and switch your default language between German and English. Press the submit button on completion. Your private account will then be created and a confirmation mail is send to your e-mail address. This mail also serves to activate your account. To do so, open the mail please and click the activation link. Your account is now activated and you'r right logged into your account on Vidmap.

Why is Vidmap so interesting?

Especially interesting in Vidmap is the idea to browse through videos by place rather than time. Seeking to places inside a video is managed with aid of a moving progress marker inside the map. Notable is the ease of adding a video to a map. Just click twice on the map to mark starting and ending points. Vidmap will then connect the two points by routing automatically through the streets in between. Just as you know it from Google Maps.

Upload process improved

We received quite a few complaints from users who experienced problems while trying to upload new content to Vidmap. First of all, thank you very much for your feedback. Special thanks go to Tracy Boyer and her website Interactive Interactivity for her valuable input.

To cut the long story short, we spent the day improving Vidmap's capabilities in handling loads of new video formats. Among these: Flash Video (*.flv) and Motion JPEG (*.mov). Most of you who experienced upload problems will hopefully benefit from these improvements! In the near future more and more video codecs will be added, depending on which formats our users would like to upload.

If in any case you were affected by those recent problems in the submission process, we hope you feel encouraged now to retry uploading your video files (step 1) again, to put them on the map (step 2) and also to synchronize the video/map playback (step 3) if needed.

The Vidmap home base has just been updated to make your vidmaps easily accessible for everyone by listing them in categories like "most recent", "popular" or "longest" on the main page.

Embed Vidmap in your own website!

One more great feature has been added to the Vidmap.de website! Now you can easily place any public Video on Vidmap in any external site with just a few clicks. Apart from allowing everyone to embed your vidmaps (public mode), you can also choose to protect your material by marking it as "private". A unique feature is the possibility to allow specific websites (e.g. your own homepage) to exclusively import your private vidmaps.

Vidmap speaks Flash!

The Vidmap player just changed it's code basis from Javascript to Actionscript 3. The main reasons to completely switch the underlying technology were cross-browser troubles, performance issues and unreliable cross-domain client-to-server communication.
